On returning from the United States after completing his Bachelors Degree with a double major in International Relations and International Politics from American University, Washington DC, Samir joined filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra as an assistant during the production of ‘Kareeb’. In 1998, he left for Tanzania, Dar- es- Salaam, where he made several documentary films about the region. Later, he worked with the CNN affiliated Television Station in Dar – es – Salaam as the station manager. He also directed various television commercials for the African region.

In 2002, Samir Karnik came back to Mumbai, India and started his own production house known as Top Angle Productions in an endeavor to create quality cinema in the future. Samir first venture was a full-length commercial Hindi movie, Kyun ho Gaya Na which released worldwide in 2004. It was Top Angle’s first production with Boney Kapoor as the producer. Samir’s directorial debut featured Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Vivek Oberoi, Sunil Shetty, Om puri, Rati Agnihotri, Tinu Anand among others.

In 2006, Top Angle Productions, followed it up with critically acclaimed feature Nanhe Jaisalmer starring Bobby Deol and introducing child prodigy Dwij Yadav. The film won an award at the Chicago Film Festival and was an independent entry at the Cannes Film Festival. The renowned Director of Photography Binod Pradhan shot the film.

Samir Karnik in partnership with Future Picture Company launched Heroes featuring Sunny Deol, Salman Khan, Bobby Deol, Preity Zinta, Sohail Khan, Vatsal Sheth, Dino Morea and Mithun Chakraborty, Riya Sen, Amrita Arora among others. The film was produced and directed by Samir and released in October 2008. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, invited the film’s script to the Oscars library

Soon after, Vaada Raha, a second in the series of Nanhe Jaisalmer brings back Bobby Deol and Dwij Yadav yet again accompanied by Kangana Ranaut. It released in September 2009 and has been produced and directed by Samir.

Thereafter, one of the most successful films of 2011, Yamla Pagla Deewana was Produced and Directed by Samir under the banner of Top Angle Productions. A complete entertainer starring Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Kulraj Randhawa, Anupam Kher and others. The film released on 14^th of January 2011 and was one of the highest grosser for the year. Binod Pradhan and Kabir Lal shot the film. Furthermore, Anal Arasu made his debut in Bollywood as the Action Director.
